When cataloguing in InMagic, do you

1) Do all original cataloguing?
2) Routinely import MARC records for all your cataloguing?
3) Other?

Do you use your own thesaurus, or use LC or other external subject headings? How do you deal with hierarchies?

Many thanks for any responses.

We do original cataloguing as well and doing copy cataloguing by copying and pasting records off our National Library's catalogue

Our library does as much copy cataloging as possible. No MARC records though so everything is copy and paste from LOC's Z39.50 gateway if a record is available. However, all of our subject cataloging is original as we have our own subject thesaurus.

I am interested in learning of ways in which I can incorporate MARC records into our system. As in, downloading the MARC format and converting it to our system format. At this point, I'm not sure if that is possible. Does anyone have experience with this in their library catalog?

We import MARC records from BookWhere using the MARC Transformer (we use Genie), and it seems to be working fine. Before we upgraded to Genie, we saved records in BookWhere in InMagic format and imported them; that wasn't as successful but it still saved a lot of typing. I haven't tried it, but you might be able to save records from the LC web site and import them. BookWhere is not very expensive and it's a good alternative for those of us who can't afford OCLC.
