When attempting to import an XML file an error message is generated on screen as per text files but the exception file is empty.

If you get an error on the screen, the error is in the formatting of the XML file (or the XSL file if you didn't use the default XSL file). DB/TextWorks hasn't gotten to the step where it would start importing and generate the batch file.

You need to correct the XML/XSL error shown in the message before proceeding.
